The ongoing focus of Needlestick Safety and Prevention

Dr. Amber Mitchell, president and executive director of the International Safety Center, and a leading advocate on needlestick safety and prevention was interviewed regarding the importance of ongoing focus on sharps safety and enhancing employee training to reduce needlestick injuries.

A combination of increased patient volumes, employee exhaustion, and supply chain disruptions have created a perfect storm resulting in a diminished focus on the healthcare facility culture of safety. She discussed the importance of robust documentation to better understand the nature of needlestick injuries. Additionally, frontline employees must be involved in the selection and feedback of safety devices that can help protect them from needlestick injuries. Also, ongoing training is necessary to preserve a culture of safety surrounding the issue of needlesticks.
