Underreporting in Accidental Needlesticks
This 2018 foreign study (Iran) shows how underreporting is rampant and often due to how busy nurses in this particular study are in their course of work and activity. In order to fully understand the incidence and prevalence of this pervasive issue, ongoing education programs are essential in encouraging practitioners to report each accidental needlestick. In addition to ensuring proper protocols and prophylaxis are provided to diminish risk among those affected. In the U.S. ensuring there is a “culture of safety” encouraging reporting is essential in creating an optimal environment for practitioners to feel safe and encouraged to report and document their needlestick injuries.
